Using GUVs (giant unilamellar vesicles) instead of cells, bilayer recordings can also be performed with the Patchliner. The GUVs are in electrolyte solution and are simply pipetted on the chip  like a cell suspension. Then they are positioned and sealed automatically by our software. The formation of a planar lipid bilayer by this method is very easy and reliable and only takes about a minute. The data below show a GUV derived bilayer where Gramicidin is incorporated. Gramicidin is a barrel shaped molecule, which forms a conducting channel in the membrane by dimerization.

Traces were recorded in 100 mM HCl at -100 mV.
