29.10.2021: Meet Rocco Zerlotti - Employee Interview

Tell us your story- how did your path lead you to Nanion Technologies?

Like most things in life, I would say a good combination of luck and determination. I started my degree in Biotechnology when I was 24 years old in Parma, Italy. I then went on to get my Master´s degree in Biomolecular Chemistry. After that I decided that I wanted to go abroad and continue my studies by getting a PhD. Fortunately, I came across the NeuroTrans ETN program on a website and decided to apply. When I had the opportunity for an interview with Nanion, I was surprised. I had no background in electrophysiology, so I studied hard to get the basics and I think I did a good job. After a few days, I received an email telling me that I had been selected. I remember that, already during the interview, I had the impression of a great working environment, and this feeling was later confirmed in reality.

Knowing what you know now, what 3 pieces of advice would you give your 21-year-old self?

  1. The first piece of advice would be: start your degree now, don't waste too much time on jobs that don't represent you.
  2. The second would be: believe in yourself more. I've never had great self-esteem. It was only during University that I realized that the more I recognized myself, the more my results improved, not only in my studies.
  3. Finally, one thing I know is good at any age: don't be lazy. If I have a goal now, I pursue it with all my energy. The outcome can't be all bad if I really put my all into it.

One Last Question- what’s the coolest thing about your job?

There are many great things about my job, but if I have to pick one, it's unpredictability. When a new problem arises, I have to think differently each time to solve it. It's like being a detective and trying to catch the little quirks as the clues that really are to solve the case. This is something that keeps my head active all the time, and I love it. I still need a lot of practice, of course, but I have good mentors and good colleagues to help me.
