PepT1 - Peptide Transporter 1 - SLC15A1
Proton-dependent oligopeptide Transporter also known as POT, PTR Peptide transport family or NRF family
Besides members in plants, yeast, archaea and both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, there are five known members of this family in humans: SLC15A1 - SLC15A5 (Peptide transporter 1 to Peptide transporter 4, the function of SLC15A5 is unknown)
Members exhibit twelve putative or established transmembrane α-helical spanners.
PepT1 is localized at the brush border membrane of the intestinal epithelium and mediates the uptake of di- and tripeptides from the lumen into the enterocytes. This protein plays an important role in the uptake and digestion of dietary proteins. As well, it facilitates the absorption of numerous peptidomimetic drugs.
