Employee Interview-

Meet Nicoletta Murciano

“Tell us your story- how did your path lead you to Nanion Technologies?”

I was born in a small city in Puglia, a region in the southeast of Italy. At the age of 19, I moved away from my hometown to study in Florence and there I completed my bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a master’s degree in Biology. During my master’s degree I did an Erasmus traineeship in the University of Portsmouth in UK. This was a great experience in a stimulating environment. This made clear my decision to work abroad for my future career of researcher. After graduation I had a year of internship in a laboratory of electrophysiology in Florence that allowed me to obtain skills in the manual patch clamp technique. I was immediately interested in the topic and experimental technique. I looked for a PhD in electrophysiology field and I applied for the PhD position in Nanion Technologies, one of the partners of the EVIDENCE project. I felt that my skill and mindset were ideally suited to the position. I was enrolled on the 1st of March 2020. I´ve begun my second year already and all I can say is that was a great decision. I like my project and I think that Nanion Technologies company is a great environment for young researchers.

“Knowing what you know now, what 3 pieces of advice would you give your 21-year-old self?”

  1. Believe in yourself – no matter how difficult some decisions are, invest in your confidence and don’t give up in the face of adversity. If we don’t believe it, how can we expect someone else to do it?
  2. Don’t waste time looking for your “vocation” – do what you like. In this way your inclinations, abilities, talents will emerge, to which you can then dedicate yourself, even to transform them into a “job”.
  3. Remember that there is not a single truth – There are so many points of view, so many truths, it is up to us to build our own and fight for the things we believe.

“One Last Question- what’s the coolest thing about your job?”

Working for Nanion is exciting, challenging and it never gets boring. I really appreciate innovative research with modern techniques and constantly updates. Working in this company allows me to carry out my research with the best tools I would never expect. It´s amazing using these outstanding Nanion´s devices for my PhD.  What is also cool is that the environment is very professional but also very friendly. I am part of a very functional and collaborative team. I always share my ideas or experiments results with my colleagues and I always had a great and stimulating feedback from them.
